Benjamin Hardy, author of Willpower Doesn’t Work, gives this advice: Remove from your environment anything that interferes with your goals.
Separating yourself from everyday life is difficult. You are used to her, perhaps you like her. But if you want to take it to the next level, you need to get rid of many of the things that are at the core of your identity today – physical things, including possibly possessions, emotional, distractions.
All this will have to be released, otherwise you will not get out of your present shell. Start by removing what you don’t regularly use. Check the closets and remove any clothing that has not been worn in the last three months. You need no more than six outfits per season. Clean up your kitchen. Remove food you are not going to eat. If you are trying to lose weight, there should be no sweets in your kitchen. Otherwise, you are deceiving yourself.
Set an upper and lower limit on everything: your belongings, your spending of time and money. Examples of the upper limit: do not spend more than 10 minutes on social media; not work more than 40 hours a week; do not eat more than 3 times a day. Examples of the lower limit: Run at least three laps in the stadium; cook at home at least three times a week.
If your environment is cluttered, it will clutter your mind. All this is extra ballast that needs to be disposed of.
If you have a smartphone, erase any apps that don’t help you achieve your goal. And generally keep it away. When you go for a walk with your family, you can even leave it at home in your work bag.
Surround yourself with people who are connected to your future, not your past. Otherwise, they will keep you in the environment from which you want to get away. Better be an example for them to move to the next level.
Why shouldn’t we always rely on our willpower and how to create the right environment for positive change and achievement of goals? Find out the answers to these questions in Useless Willpower.
